What's in the Box

The IKEA TRADFRI Remote Control comes with the five-button remote unit, a magnetic mounting bracket with adhesive backing, and a quick start guide. This remote is designed to control IKEA smart lighting and operates on the Zigbee protocol. It features a central on/off button, brightness up and down buttons, and left and right arrows for cycling through color temperatures or scenes on compatible bulbs. A CR2032 coin cell battery is pre-installed and typically lasts around two years.

Prerequisites

Before setting up the remote, confirm you have the following:

  • An IKEA Dirigera hub or TRADFRI Gateway, fully configured and connected to your home network
  • The IKEA Home Smart app installed and signed in on your phone
  • At least one IKEA smart bulb or smart device already paired to your hub
  • A clean, flat surface or wall where you intend to mount the remote

Step-by-Step Setup

  1. Activate the battery. Open the back cover of the remote by pressing the release tab and sliding it off. Pull out the plastic battery isolation strip to activate the pre-installed CR2032 battery. Replace the back cover securely.
  2. Open the IKEA Home Smart app. Tap the "+" icon on the home screen to add a new device. Choose "Remote or controller" from the device type options.
  3. Enter pairing mode. Press and hold the small pairing button inside the battery compartment (or on the back near the battery, depending on your hardware revision) for about 10 seconds. The front LED indicator will begin pulsing, signaling the remote is ready to pair.
  4. Complete the pairing. The app should discover the remote within a few seconds. Tap to confirm the connection, then give the remote a descriptive name such as "Living Room Remote."
  5. Assign lights to the remote. In the app, navigate to the remote's settings and select which bulbs or light groups it should control. You can assign an entire room's lights to a single remote for unified control.
  6. Mount the remote. Attach the adhesive mounting bracket to your chosen wall or surface. Press firmly and allow the adhesive to bond for at least 30 seconds. The remote magnetically clicks into the bracket, making it easy to remove and hold in your hand when needed.

Using the Remote

The center button toggles your assigned lights on and off. The top and bottom buttons adjust brightness — press once for incremental changes or hold for smooth dimming. The left and right arrows cycle through available color temperatures on white-spectrum bulbs or switch between saved scenes on color bulbs. The remote communicates directly with the bulbs over Zigbee, so it works instantly without any app or cloud dependency once paired.

Smart Home Integration Tips

The TRADFRI Remote is an input device, meaning it sends commands but cannot itself be controlled by voice assistants or automations. However, the lights it controls are fully accessible through Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa via the Dirigera hub's Matter bridge. This means your lights respond to both the remote and voice commands without conflict. In Home Assistant, the remote's button presses can be captured as events through Zigbee2MQTT, allowing you to create custom automations like "left arrow activates movie mode" or "right arrow sets all lights to full brightness."

Quick Troubleshooting

If the remote stops controlling your lights, first replace the CR2032 battery as depletion is the most common cause. If the issue persists, re-pair the remote by pressing and holding the pairing button for 10 seconds and repeating the setup steps. Make sure the remote is within Zigbee range of either the hub or a nearby powered Zigbee device like a smart bulb, which acts as a mesh repeater. If individual buttons stop cycling through colors, check the IKEA Home Smart app for a firmware update for the remote — updates occasionally fix button mapping issues.
