What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue Bridge
  • An Ethernet cable (included)
  • The Hue Bridge power adapter (included)
  • A Wi-Fi router with an available Ethernet port
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed

Step 1: Choose a Location for the Bridge

Place the Hue Bridge near your Wi-Fi router since it requires a wired Ethernet connection. The Bridge communicates with your bulbs and accessories over Zigbee, a low-power wireless protocol with a range of approximately 30 to 50 feet indoors. For the best performance, position the Bridge in a central location relative to where most of your Hue devices will be installed. Avoid placing it inside a closed cabinet or behind large metal objects that could interfere with the Zigbee signal.

Step 2: Connect the Ethernet Cable

Plug one end of the included Ethernet cable into the port on the back of the Hue Bridge. Connect the other end to an available LAN port on your router. The Bridge does not support Wi-Fi and must remain physically connected to your router at all times.

Step 3: Power On the Bridge

Connect the included power adapter to the Hue Bridge and plug it into a wall outlet. The Bridge will begin its boot sequence. Wait approximately 60 seconds for all four indicator LEDs on the top of the Bridge to light up. Here is what each LED means:

  1. Power LED: Confirms the Bridge has power.
  2. Network LED: Confirms the Ethernet connection to your router is active.
  3. Internet LED: Confirms the Bridge can reach Philips Hue cloud services.
  4. Portal LED: Confirms remote access and software updates are available.

All four LEDs should be solid blue when the Bridge is fully ready.

Step 4: Set Up the Bridge in the Hue App

Open the Philips Hue app on your smartphone. If this is your first time using the app, tap Get Started. The app will scan your local network for the Bridge. Make sure your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as the router the Bridge is plugged into. When the app finds the Bridge, it will display a prompt asking you to press the link button.

Step 5: Press the Link Button

Walk over to the Hue Bridge and press the large round button on the top. You have 30 seconds after the app prompts you to press it. This physical button press is a security measure to ensure only someone with physical access to the Bridge can pair with it. The app will confirm the connection and bring you to the home screen.

Step 6: Update the Firmware

After initial setup, check for firmware updates immediately. In the Hue app, go to Settings and then Software Update. If an update is available, install it. Firmware updates often include performance improvements, new features, and important security patches. The Bridge will restart automatically after the update completes.

Step 7: Add Your First Devices

With the Bridge connected and updated, you can begin adding Hue lights and accessories. In the app, go to Settings, then Lights, and tap Add Light. The Bridge will search for any powered-on Hue devices within Zigbee range. Each Hue bulb or accessory you add extends the Zigbee mesh network, potentially improving signal coverage throughout your home.

Tips for Optimal Performance

  • The Hue Bridge supports up to 50 lights and 12 accessories such as switches and sensors.
  • If you have a large home, place Hue bulbs between the Bridge and distant rooms to extend the Zigbee mesh network.
  • Enable automatic updates in the Hue app so the Bridge always runs the latest firmware.
  • If you plan to use Matter, navigate to Settings and then HomeKit & Matter to enable Matter support and pair with platforms like Apple Home or Google Home directly.
