What You Will Need

  • Philips Hue Outdoor Motion Sensor
  • A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
  • A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
  • The included mounting bracket and screws
  • A drill and screwdriver for wall mounting
  • Two AA batteries (included)
  • At least one Hue outdoor light or accessible indoor light to trigger

Step 1: Insert the Batteries

Open the battery compartment on the back of the Outdoor Motion Sensor. Insert the two included AA batteries, observing the correct polarity markings. Close the compartment securely. The weatherproof seal on the battery cover helps keep moisture out.

Step 2: Add the Sensor to Your Bridge

  1. Open the Philips Hue app.
  2. Go to Settings, then Accessories.
  3. Tap Add Accessory and select Hue Outdoor Sensor.
  4. Press the setup button on the sensor as prompted. The LED will blink to indicate it is in pairing mode.
  5. The app will discover the sensor and pair it to the Bridge.

Step 3: Configure Sensor Behavior

Once paired, configure the sensor settings in the app:

  • Room assignment: Select which outdoor room or lights the sensor should activate. You can trigger outdoor lights, indoor lights, or both.
  • Scene selection: Choose what happens when motion is detected. A bright white scene works well for security, while a warm dim scene is better for welcome-home lighting.
  • Daylight sensitivity: The built-in light sensor prevents triggering during daylight hours. Adjust the threshold to control when the sensor considers it "dark enough" to activate.
  • Turn-off timer: Set how long lights stay on after the last detected motion. For outdoor use, 5 to 10 minutes is typical.
  • Time-based rules: Set different behaviors for daytime, evening, and nighttime. For example, full brightness in the evening and very dim at 3 AM to avoid disturbing neighbors.

Step 4: Choose the Mounting Location

The Outdoor Motion Sensor should be placed where it can detect approaching people without being triggered by passing cars, animals, or wind-blown foliage. Good locations include:

  • Above or beside the front door, aimed at the walkway
  • Near the garage, aimed at the driveway
  • On a back porch, aimed at the patio or garden entrance
  • Along a side path or gate

The sensor has a detection range of approximately 40 feet (12 meters) with a wide detection angle. Mount it at a height of 6 to 8 feet for optimal coverage.

Step 5: Mount the Sensor

  1. Hold the mounting bracket against the wall at the chosen location.
  2. Mark the screw holes with a pencil.
  3. Drill pilot holes and insert wall anchors if mounting to brick or masonry.
  4. Secure the bracket with screws.
  5. Attach the sensor to the bracket. The bracket allows you to adjust the tilt angle to aim the sensor at the desired detection zone.

Step 6: Test and Adjust

  1. Walk through the intended detection zone. The lights should turn on.
  2. Walk around the edges of the detection area to map where the sensor can and cannot see you.
  3. If the sensor triggers from areas you want to exclude (like a busy street), adjust the tilt angle or reduce the sensitivity in the app.
  4. Test at night to confirm the daylight sensitivity setting works correctly.

Tips

  • The Outdoor Motion Sensor is rated IP54 for weather resistance, handling rain and dust exposure.
  • AA batteries typically last 2 years with normal outdoor use. The Hue app will alert you when battery level is low.
  • Avoid aiming the sensor at heat sources like dryer vents, HVAC units, or dark pavement that absorbs and radiates heat, as these can cause false triggers.
  • For comprehensive outdoor security automation, pair the sensor with Hue outdoor lights and set up a bright flash response to deter intruders.
  • You can link the outdoor sensor to indoor lights as well. For example, trigger a hallway light when someone approaches the front door so you have light before you enter.
