What You Will Need
- SmartThings Hub v3
- SmartThings app (iOS or Android) with a Samsung account
- Ethernet cable (included)
- Your home WiFi router with an available LAN port
- Micro-USB power adapter (included)
- A 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi network (for WiFi-connected devices)
Understanding the SmartThings Hub v3
The SmartThings Hub v3 is the central controller for your Samsung SmartThings ecosystem. It supports three wireless protocols: Zigbee, Z-Wave, and WiFi. This means it can communicate with a wide range of smart home devices from Samsung and hundreds of third-party brands. The hub connects to your home network via Ethernet and communicates with the SmartThings cloud to enable app control and automations.
Step 1: Position the Hub
- Place the SmartThings Hub in a central location in your home for the best Zigbee and Z-Wave coverage.
- Elevate the hub on a shelf or table rather than placing it on the floor.
- Keep it at least three feet away from your WiFi router to minimize wireless interference between Zigbee/Z-Wave and WiFi signals.
- Avoid placing it inside a metal cabinet or behind a television, as these block wireless signals.
Step 2: Connect the Hub
- Connect the included Ethernet cable from a LAN port on your router to the Ethernet port on the back of the SmartThings Hub.
- Plug in the micro-USB power adapter and connect it to the hub.
- The LED on the front of the hub will begin flashing. Wait for it to cycle through its startup sequence, which takes approximately two to three minutes.
- When the LED turns solid green, the hub is connected to the internet and ready for setup.
Step 3: Set Up in the SmartThings App
- Open the SmartThings app on your phone.
- If you do not already have a Samsung account, create one when prompted.
- Tap the + icon and select Add Device.
- Select SmartThings, then choose Hub.
- The app will search for your hub on the local network. If found, it will display the hub's serial number for confirmation.
- Tap to confirm and complete the registration. The hub is now linked to your Samsung account.
- Set a location name (e.g., "Home") and confirm your address. Location information is used for geofencing features and local weather data.
Step 4: Add Your First Devices
With the hub online, you can start adding smart home devices:
- Tap the + icon and select Add Device.
- You can add devices by brand (Samsung, Philips Hue, Yale, etc.) or by device type (sensor, light, lock, etc.).
- Follow the on-screen pairing instructions for each device. Zigbee and Z-Wave devices pair directly through the hub. WiFi devices connect through your home network.
- Name each device and assign it to a room for organized control.
Step 5: Create Rooms and Automations
- Rooms — Organize devices into rooms (Living Room, Bedroom, Kitchen) for easy management. Go to the room tab and create rooms matching your home layout.
- Automations — Create routines that trigger actions based on time, device state, location, or other conditions. For example, turn off all lights at 11 PM, or unlock the front door when you arrive home.
- Scenes — Create scenes that set multiple devices to specific states with a single tap. For example, a "Movie Night" scene that dims the lights, turns on the TV, and closes the blinds.
- SmartThings Home Monitor — Set up security monitoring using door/window sensors and motion detectors. Configure alerts for intrusion, smoke, and water leak detection.
Tips for Best Performance
- The hub supports up to 200+ connected devices across Zigbee, Z-Wave, and WiFi.
- Zigbee and Z-Wave devices create mesh networks. Adding more always-powered devices (like smart plugs and switches) extends the range for battery-powered sensors.
- The hub requires a constant internet connection for cloud-based automations, remote control, and voice assistant integration. Some local automations may continue to work during brief outages.
- Keep the hub's firmware updated. Updates install automatically when the hub is connected to the internet.
- The SmartThings platform works with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Bixby for voice control.
