Understanding the Issue
The Eve Aqua is a smart water controller that connects to an outdoor faucet and provides HomeKit-based scheduling and remote control for garden irrigation. When the Eve Aqua or other Eve HomeKit devices stop responding or exhibit Thread connectivity issues, the problem typically involves wireless range, battery power, home hub status, or network configuration.
Common Causes
- The Eve Aqua's batteries are depleted (it runs on two AA batteries)
- The device is installed too far from the nearest Thread router or Bluetooth hub
- The Apple Home hub (HomePod, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV 4K) is offline or not acting as the active hub
- The Thread mesh network has insufficient coverage for outdoor devices
- Firmware is outdated, causing connectivity or scheduling failures
- The device's HomeKit pairing has become corrupted
- Wi-Fi network changes (new router, new password) have disrupted the home hub's connection
Step 1: Check Battery Level
- Open the Eve app and navigate to the Eve Aqua in your device list.
- Check the battery level indicator. The Eve Aqua uses two AA batteries.
- If the battery is below 20 percent, replace both batteries with fresh ones. Use high-quality lithium AA batteries for the best performance in outdoor temperature extremes.
- After replacing batteries, wait one to two minutes for the device to reconnect to HomeKit.
Step 2: Verify HomeKit Hub Status
- Open the Apple Home app, tap the three-dot menu, and select Home Settings.
- Confirm your home hub (HomePod, HomePod Mini, or Apple TV 4K) shows as Connected.
- If the hub shows Not Connected, check that it is plugged in and connected to your Wi-Fi network.
- If you recently changed your Wi-Fi router or password, the hub may need to be reconnected. Follow Apple's instructions to update Wi-Fi credentials on your hub device.
- Restart the hub by unplugging it for 30 seconds and reconnecting it.
Step 3: Check Thread Network Coverage
- If the Eve Aqua supports Thread (newer models do), open the Eve app and go to Settings > Thread Network.
- Check whether the Eve Aqua appears in the Thread network topology. If it is missing, the device may be out of Thread range.
- Thread mesh networks extend range through powered Thread devices acting as routers. Since the Eve Aqua is typically installed outdoors, it may be far from your indoor Thread border router.
- Add a powered Thread device (such as an Eve Energy plug) near a window or door closest to the outdoor faucet. This device will act as a Thread router and bridge the connection to the Aqua.
- If using a Bluetooth-only model, ensure the home hub is within 10 to 15 meters of the outdoor installation.
Step 4: Power Cycle and Reconnect
- Remove the batteries from the Eve Aqua, wait 30 seconds, and reinsert them.
- Restart your home hub by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
- Wait two to three minutes for both devices to reconnect.
- Check the Home app to see if the Eve Aqua now shows as connected and responsive.
Step 5: Verify Schedules and Automations
- If the Eve Aqua connects but does not water on schedule, open the Eve app and check the watering schedules configured for the device.
- Schedules stored on the device run independently even without a network connection, but schedules created in the Home app as automations require a connected hub.
- Verify that the correct days, times, and durations are set.
- If schedules appear correct but do not run, delete them and recreate them.
Step 6: Update Firmware
- Open the Eve app and go to Settings > Devices.
- Select the Eve Aqua and check for available firmware updates.
- Install any updates. For Thread models, the update is delivered over the Thread network. For Bluetooth models, keep your phone close to the device during the update.
Step 7: Reset and Re-Pair
- If the Eve Aqua remains unresponsive, perform a factory reset by pressing and holding the button on the device for 10 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly.
- Remove the device from the Home app by selecting it, tapping settings, and choosing Remove Accessory.
- Re-add the device by scanning its HomeKit setup code.
- Recreate any watering schedules after re-pairing.
Additional Tips
- In freezing climates, remove the Eve Aqua from the outdoor faucet during winter to prevent water damage and battery degradation.
- The Eve Aqua's child lock feature can prevent accidental activation. If the device does not respond to manual button presses, check if the child lock is enabled in the Eve app.
- If multiple Eve devices are offline simultaneously, the issue is likely with your home hub or Thread border router rather than individual devices. Focus troubleshooting on the hub first.
