If your IKEA Tradfri smart bulb won't pair with the remote, gateway, or third-party hubs, or isn't responding to commands, this guide will help you troubleshoot these issues.
Bulb Won't Pair with Tradfri Remote
To pair a bulb directly to a Tradfri remote:
- Position the remote within 5cm of the bulb
- Turn the bulb on
- Press and hold the pairing button on the remote for 10 seconds
- The bulb should flash once indicating successful pairing
- If it doesn't flash, reset the bulb first (see below)
- One remote can control multiple bulbs
Bulb Won't Connect to Dirigera/Gateway
For hub-based setup issues:
- Reset the bulb before trying to add it to the gateway
- Keep the bulb close to the gateway during initial setup
- Use the IKEA Home smart app (not the old Tradfri app)
- Ensure the gateway firmware is up to date
- Check that the gateway is connected to your network
- Try power cycling the gateway
Pairing with Third-Party Hubs (Hue, SmartThings)
IKEA bulbs use Zigbee and can pair with other hubs:
- Reset the bulb first by toggling power 6 times
- Put your hub into Zigbee pairing mode
- Turn on the bulb - it should be discovered
- Philips Hue: Use the "Search" function in the Hue app
- Some features may be limited on third-party hubs
- Distance to hub matters during initial pairing
Bulb Not Responding to Commands
When the bulb stops responding:
- Check if the physical light switch is turned off
- Verify the bulb is still connected in the app
- Power cycle the bulb by turning the switch off for 10 seconds
- Check if other Tradfri devices are also affected (gateway issue)
- Move the bulb closer to the gateway or add a repeater
- Try controlling with the physical remote
Remote Not Controlling Bulb
If the remote stops working:
- Replace the remote battery (CR2032)
- Re-pair the remote to the bulb
- Check that the bulb is still paired to the remote
- Reset both the remote and bulb and pair again
- Ensure nothing is blocking the signal path
- Clean the battery contacts in the remote
Bulb Flickering or Not Dimming Properly
For lighting quality issues:
- Ensure the bulb isn't in a fixture with a physical dimmer
- Check the bulb is fully screwed into the socket
- Update firmware if connected to a gateway
- Try the bulb in a different fixture
- Flickering at low brightness may be normal for some bulbs
- Replace if flickering persists - may be defective
Zigbee Range Issues
If the bulb loses connection frequently:
- Tradfri bulbs act as Zigbee repeaters when powered
- Add more Tradfri bulbs between the gateway and problem bulbs
- Use Tradfri signal repeater for extended range
- Keep the gateway away from WiFi routers
- Metal objects and thick walls reduce Zigbee range
Reset the Tradfri Bulb
To factory reset:
- Turn the bulb off
- Turn on for 0.5 seconds, off for 0.5 seconds - repeat 6 times
- On the 6th time, leave the bulb on
- The bulb will flash once to confirm reset
- The bulb is now ready to pair with any controller
- You may need to remove it from your gateway app first
