Common Causes
- The shade driver has lost its Zigbee connection to the Aqara hub
- The battery is depleted or the USB-C power source is disconnected
- The bead chain has slipped off the internal gear or the wrong adapter is installed
- Travel limits (upper and lower positions) are not calibrated
- The motor is overloaded because the shade is too heavy or the chain has too much friction
- Hub firmware or device firmware is outdated
Fix 1: Check Power Supply
- Verify the USB-C cable is securely connected to the Roller Shade Driver E1 and that the power adapter is plugged into a working outlet.
- If using battery power only, check the battery level in the Aqara Home app. Recharge the driver if the battery is low.
- Try a different USB-C cable and adapter to rule out a faulty power supply.
- The driver's LED should illuminate when it has power. If the LED is completely dark, the unit is not receiving power.
Fix 2: Inspect the Bead Chain
- Examine the bead chain where it threads through the driver. The beads should sit snugly in the internal gear teeth.
- If the chain has slipped out of the gear, re-thread it by pulling the chain through the driver's channel until it engages with the gear.
- Check that the correct bead-size adapter is installed. The E1 ships with adapters for 3mm and 4mm beads. Using the wrong adapter causes slipping.
- If the chain is kinked, tangled, or has damaged beads, straighten it or replace the chain. Damaged links can jam the gear mechanism.
Fix 3: Recalibrate Travel Limits
If the shade moves but stops at the wrong position (does not fully open or close), the upper and lower limits need recalibration.
- Open the Aqara Home app and navigate to the Roller Shade Driver E1's device page.
- Tap Settings and select Set Upper and Lower Limits (or Calibration).
- Use the app controls to move the shade to the fully open position. Tap Set Upper Limit.
- Move the shade to the fully closed position. Tap Set Lower Limit.
- Confirm the settings and test by commanding the shade to open and close from the app. The shade should move accurately between the two positions.
Fix 4: Reconnect via Zigbee
- Check if the driver shows as online or offline in the Aqara Home app.
- If offline, restart the hub by unplugging it for 10 seconds. Wait for the hub to come back online and see if the driver reconnects.
- If it remains offline, move the driver temporarily closer to the hub to test. If it connects at close range, the issue is Zigbee range — add a powered Zigbee repeater device between the hub and the driver.
Fix 5: Re-Pair the Driver
- Remove the driver from the Aqara Home app (Settings > Remove Device).
- Press and hold the button on the driver for 5 seconds until the LED blinks rapidly.
- In the app, tap + and add the Roller Shade Driver E1 again.
- After pairing, recalibrate the travel limits and recreate any automations (such as open at sunrise, close at sunset).
Fix 6: Reduce Motor Load
If the motor runs briefly but then stops, or if you hear grinding sounds, the shade may be too heavy for the driver.
- The Roller Shade Driver E1 is rated for standard roller shades. Very heavy blackout shades or oversized shades may exceed its capacity.
- Reduce friction by ensuring the chain runs freely without catching on window frames, brackets, or other obstructions.
- Lubricate the shade mechanism if the roller tube is sticky or stiff.
- If the shade is too heavy, consider upgrading to a motorized shade system designed for heavier loads.
Fix 7: Update Firmware
- Open the Aqara Home app and check both the hub and the driver for firmware updates.
- Install available updates. Firmware improvements can resolve motor control, calibration accuracy, and Zigbee reliability issues.
- After updating, recalibrate the travel limits to ensure accurate positioning.
When to Contact Support
If the driver's motor does not spin at all despite having power, or if it makes loud grinding or clicking noises during operation, the internal motor or gear mechanism may be damaged. Contact Aqara Support for warranty replacement.
