Smart home hubs tie everything together, and whether you need one depends on what you're connecting. If all your devices are Wi-Fi and you just use Alexa or Google to control them, you can skip a hub for now. But the moment you want Zigbee or Z-Wave devices - which are often cheaper, more reliable, and better on battery than Wi-Fi alternatives - you need something to talk to them.

Why get a hub:

  • Zigbee and Z-Wave support - These protocols don't talk Wi-Fi. Devices like Aqara sensors, Hue bulbs, and many locks need a hub that speaks their language.
  • Local control - Cloud-based setups mean your lights stop working when the internet goes down. A hub that processes automations locally keeps everything running regardless.
  • Faster response times - Local processing means your light turns on the instant the motion sensor trips, not after a round trip to a server.
  • One app for everything - Instead of six apps for six brands, a good hub puts it all in one place.

The big players:

  • Home Assistant - The most powerful option by far, but it has a learning curve. Runs on a Raspberry Pi, mini PC, or dedicated hardware. Supports basically everything and processes locally. Great if you enjoy tinkering. Not ideal if you just want plug-and-play.
  • SmartThings - Samsung's hub is a solid middle ground. Easy setup, good device support, decent app. Works with most Zigbee and Z-Wave devices. Good for people who want more than Alexa but less complexity than Home Assistant.
  • Hubitat - Similar to SmartThings but fully local. No cloud dependency, which is great for reliability and privacy. Less polished interface, but very capable once configured.
  • Apple Home - A HomePod or Apple TV acts as a hub for HomeKit and Matter devices. Limited breadth, but clean interface that just works in the Apple ecosystem.

A note on Matter: The Matter standard is supposed to make hubs less necessary by giving devices a common language. In practice, adoption is still rolling out. If you're starting fresh with all Matter devices, you might get by with just a HomePod, Echo, or Nest speaker as your controller. But for most setups today, a proper hub still makes sense.
