What You Will Need
- Philips Hue Tap Dial Switch
- A Philips Hue Bridge (set up and connected to your router)
- A smartphone or tablet with the Philips Hue app installed
- The included mounting plate and adhesive
- At least one Hue light already set up and assigned to a room
What Makes the Tap Dial Switch Different
The Hue Tap Dial Switch combines four programmable buttons with a rotary dial for intuitive light control. Unlike the Dimmer Switch, the Tap Dial does not use a battery for the buttons. It uses kinetic energy harvested from each button press to power itself, while the dial ring uses a small replaceable battery. This means the buttons will never run out of power.
Step 1: Add the Tap Dial to Your Bridge
- Open the Philips Hue app.
- Go to Settings, then Accessories.
- Tap Add Accessory and select Hue Tap Dial Switch.
- Follow the on-screen prompts. You will need to press a specific button on the switch to initiate pairing.
- The app will discover and pair the switch with your Bridge.
Step 2: Configure the Four Buttons
Each of the four buttons on the Tap Dial can be programmed to perform a different action. Common configurations include:
- Button 1: Turn on living room lights with the "Relax" scene.
- Button 2: Activate "Energize" for bright, productive lighting.
- Button 3: Turn on bedroom lights at 20% with warm white.
- Button 4: Turn off all lights in the house.
To configure each button, go to Settings, then Accessories, tap the Tap Dial, and assign actions to each button. You can assign different rooms, scenes, or specific lights to each one.
Step 3: Set Up the Rotary Dial
The outer ring of the Tap Dial is a physical rotary dial that controls brightness. Rotate it clockwise to brighten the lights and counterclockwise to dim them. The dial controls whichever room or lights were last activated by one of the four buttons. In the app, you can also configure the dial to control a specific room regardless of which button was last pressed.
Step 4: Choose a Mounting Location
The Tap Dial Switch has a clean, round design that looks good mounted on any wall. Ideal locations include:
- Next to doorways as a replacement for traditional switches
- In hallways for quick access to common lighting scenes
- On bedside walls for nightstand-level control
- In the kitchen near the entrance for quick scene switching
Step 5: Mount the Switch
- Clean the wall surface where you will mount the backplate.
- Peel the adhesive backing from the mounting plate and press it firmly against the wall for 30 seconds.
- Alternatively, use screws to mount the backplate for a more permanent installation.
- Snap the Tap Dial onto the backplate magnetically.
Step 6: Test All Controls
- Press each of the four buttons and verify the correct lights and scenes activate.
- Rotate the dial clockwise and confirm the lights get brighter.
- Rotate the dial counterclockwise and confirm the lights get dimmer.
- Detach the switch from the wall and confirm it still works as a portable remote.
Advanced Configuration
The Tap Dial supports time-based button programming. For example, you can set Button 1 to activate a bright scene during the day and a dim warm scene at night. Configure this in the Hue app under the accessory settings by selecting "Time-based" for the button action.
Tips
- The four buttons are battery-free and powered by kinetic energy. The dial uses a small battery that lasts approximately 2 to 3 years.
- The Tap Dial can detach from the wall mount and be used as a portable remote, just like the Dimmer Switch.
- The rotary dial provides haptic-like feedback as you turn it, making it easy to feel how much you are adjusting the brightness.
- Each Tap Dial counts toward the 12-accessory limit on your Hue Bridge.
- If you have multiple rooms, the Tap Dial is particularly useful because each button can control a different room, making it a single switch for your entire home.
